As the Director of the Clovis (Fresno County) divison of our Hālau Hula (Hula school), I am excited to share the warmth of Aloha with you!
My name is Joydee Vicencio-Padua. I have been involved in Hula for over 30 years and it seems I fall in love with it over and over again. My Hula journey began in Toronto, Canada with Hula Hālau 'O Makamae under the direction of Renee Makamae Cruz. The growth of my studies continued with nā Kumu Hula, Alilei Espada-Talebian and Bernadette U'ilani Cruz with Spirit of Aloha 'Ohana Hula. At a young age, I was fortunate to participate in various shows, festivals, workshops and competitions across North America.
My passion for Hula was ignited when I was introduced to Kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu and so I pursued my dreams as a Hula dancer, participating with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts in the prestigious Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo, Hawaii.
But Hula is not the only thing in my life…
I am happily married to the wonderful father of our 4 children and as life happens, I had to make "adjustments" to my Hula studies. In 2007, I was invited to be a part of the Polynesian Club of Fresno (No Te Here O Te Hiroa), under the direction of Martha Leina'ala Kuma and Aunty Linda Kuma, where I found a more challenging path in my Hula journey… to share my love of Hula as a teacher.
I do not claim to be "Kumu Hula" in the traditional sense. Instead, I would like to offer you kōkua (support) in shaping your Hula journey. It is with the belief in the "Aloha Spirit" that I have chosen to give others the opportunity to grow, both individually and as a community, in Hula and with Aloha.
Enjoy your journey!
Me ke aloha pumehana,
Joydee

To support Hula and promote cultural awareness by offering and attending Hula-related workshops, lectures, performances, etc., to perpetuate the Aloha Spirit.
‘A‘ohe pau ka ‘ike i ka hālau ho‘okahi.
All knowledge is not learned in just one school.
One can learn from many sources.
To provide a family-oriented atmosphere where each individual interested in Hula aspires to be the best they can be through Hula.
HĀLAU PHILOSOPHY
The guiding foundation for Hālau Hula I Ka Lā is based on the "Aloha Spirit Law",
encoded in the Hawai'i Revised Statutes, Section 5-7.5.
Based on the values (concept) and principles (conduct) of "ALOHA", we believe that the goodness in each person can be expressed through Hula and that our representation of Hula demonstrates our respect for the Hawaiian culture, Her people and love for all people. As Ka Lā, the Sun, spreads warmth and hope with its rays, Hula is a life-giving force.
With our 'ohana (family) at Hālau Hula I Ka Lā, we strive to live and share warmth and hope with the grace of a hula dancer.
